AQUITAINE

 

With a territory of 41,309 km² the Aquitaine Region is one of the largest regions of Europe. It ranks 6th among the French regions and has a GDP of 76.9 billion EUR (2006).

 

Aquitaine’s main industrial sectors encompass (in 2006 current EUR):

- Aeronautics and Space which account for 600 establishments, 39,000 jobs and a 3.8 billion EUR turnover (2/3  Aeronautics and 1/3 Space), including 2 billion EUR exports;

- Wood, Paper and Furniture representing 1,182 establishments, 34,000 jobs and a turnover of 2.5 billion EUR, including 1 billion EUR exports;

- Agro-food representing 4,373 establishments, 30,094 jobs and a 1.8 billion EUR added value (i.e. 4,9% of the total added value of the French sector). 

 

Founded in cooperation with Midi-Pyrenees to sharpen the competitive edge of the two regions, the Aerospace Valley Competitiveness Cluster has gained international recognition in the fields of aeronautics, space and embedded systems. Aerospace Valley is the leading aeronautical and spatial cluster of Europe and one of the most important ones in the field of airborne systems. It brings together companies, research centres, education and training centres and public authorities.

 

The other Competitiveness Clusters of Aquitaine are:

Alpha - Route des Lasers (for laser photonics and applications);

Xylofutur (a technological platform for the forest-based sector);

Prod’Innov (a biocluster dedicated to the food, health, biodrugs and pharmaceutical industries).
