Partnerships with EU and space organisations

CoR- European Committee of the European Regions

The CoR is the voice of regions and cities in the European Union (EU) that represents local and regional authorities across the European Union. The Committee of the Regions is a close strategic partner of NEREUS and has supported the network since its establishment. In the recent years, partly through the commitment of politicians from NEREUS-regions, the CoR, ENVE-Commission has increasingly issued opinions on space dossiers (e.g. The space programme of the European Union and the European Union Agency for the Space Programme, ).

EC-European Commission

EC’s role is to instigate and implement the EU’s policies. NEREUS entertains a close political dialogue with the EC. At operational level, the Network has been involved in many EU funded projects (eg. EO4GEO, IMPRESSIVE,CoRdiNet). Further to this, NEREUS jointly with ESA collaborates with EC in joint initiatives such as Copernicus4Regions to develop specific space activities where regions can play a key role due to their proximity to the territories and citizens.

ESA-European Space Agency

ESA has a mission to shape the development of Europe’s space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world. NEREUS and ESA have developed over the years a partnership to promote the use of Earth Observation Data and Copernicus at regional level. In this context they have realized several initiatives in support of the Copernicus programme with the most recent one being the Copernicus4Regions project: a collection of 99 user-stories with a strong focus on Public Authorities who are the key potential users of Copernicus data.

EP-European Parliament

The EP is an important forum for political debate and decision-making at the EU level. Members of European Parliament with a constituency in NEREUS-regions are an important point of reference for the networks’s political dialogue. Further to this, NEREUS liaises closely with members from relevant Parliamentary Committees to link the use of space with a broad range of public policies outside the space sector and regional development. NEREUS in cooperation with the EP has organised in the past conferences and debates to promote and foster the regional impact of space policy in Europe.
