FORMAT-EO – Summer School

FORMAT-EO (Full name: FORmation of Multi-disciplinary Approaches to Training in Earth Observation) is a project mobilized by the members of the NEREUS CET working group (Communication Education and Training WG). It involves 8 partners from 7 NEREUS member regions.

The FORMAT-EO project consists in an ERASMUS master-level summer school on Earth Observation (EO). Following the success of the 2013 edition (19 July to August 2013 in Leicester/UK), the project has been financed also for the year 2014 (23 July to 7 August)! More info here.

The project arises from the desire of relevant NEREUS partners to improve courses in Earth Observation in a collaborative manner. The objectives of the summer school are firstly to increase student awareness and exposure to Earth Observation research and industry, providing practical experience of specialist software and tools for the analysis of satellite data; secondly to encourage interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches to solving EO problems.

The school will include practical experience of using specialist software and tools for the analysis of satellite data complemented by lectures relating to Earth Observation topics, careers information and an industry visit.

Topics of the course aim to show the breadth of subjects within Earth Observation Science and include satellite instrumentation, land cover classification, remote sensing of fires and space policy.

The PI of the project is Professor Martin Barstow at Leicester. This project stems from a European consortium of institutes involved in space research and teaching including that of Earth observation across undergraduate, masters and Ph.D. levels.

Consortium:

University of Leicester, Universidade dos Açores, Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería de Sevilla, Università degli Studi della Basilicata, Politecnico di Milano, Université de Rennes 1 and 2, Institut Telecom Bretagne, Université de Bretagne Occidentale.

Facts and figure:

The project was funded by the ERASMUS Intensive Programme (IP) with a total budget for the year 2013 of 102.576,6 Euro.
